Help students solve their own conflicts.

Teaching students the social-emotional skills to solve their own conflicts not only builds better citizens, it makes our lives easier and more enjoyable.

And there's no better place to teach and reinforce conflict resolution techniques than on the playground. At recess, students are constantly working together to solve minor problems.

Help students build better conflict resolutions skills by teaching one or more of these four techniques.

Top 60 Recommended Apps for Autism

Top 60 Recommended Apps for Autism

Children and adults with special learning needs are attracted to smart technology. Access is easy. When you touch the screen, something happens. That means tablets are easier to manage than typical desktop computers.

Using iPads for autism has captured attention

In spite of personal learning challenges, the strong visual presence and great sound quality make devices with the smart technology a perfect tool for individuals on the autism spectrum.

The range of apps goes from very simple (listening to music or playing with cause-effect activities) to high level. The variety of available apps can meet an infinite range of interests and needs.

Here’s the “magic”

There’s an app for that!
That’s not to say that all problems are “fixed” with an app. But iPads and apps can be used to teach skills and address many of the diverse issues affecting individuals with special learning needs.

Once I got my own iPad, I started to explore the app store. I have written articles and I talk about this topic in my workshops. People began to ask me questions that revealed a lot of confusion.

Here’s the most common question

I had a question at a conference. Dad wanted to know what apps I would recommend for his son on the autism spectrum.

It’s a great question, but it doesn’t have an easy answer. It’s a bit like asking a librarian “What book should I borrow.” The librarian needs a lot more information to help you find what will meet your needs.

That’s exactly the problem with all the apps in the App Store. There are more than a million apps there. How do you sort through a million apps to find the ones you want? That’s why I wrote this book.

The cost of caring for autism in the United States could hit the $1 trillion mark in another 10 years, if the disorder continued to prevail at the current rate, the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), researchers said.

The researchers arrived at the conclusion by examining national data on medical services, residential care, special education, in-home care, transportation, employment support and lost productivity. For the current year, the team estimated that autism cost could range between $162 billion and $367 billion.

The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

"The current costs of [autism] are more than double the combined costs of stroke and hypertension, and on a par with the costs of diabetes,” Paul Leigh, lead author and researcher at UC Davis, said in a statement released Tuesday. The research team projected that autism cost by 2025 could be between $276 billion and $1 trillion, with $461 being the best estimate.

The cost predictions were based on the hypothesis that effective interventions and treatments for the disorder will not be identified or widely available by 2025.

"There should be at least as much public research and government attention [paid] to finding the causes and best treatments for [autism] as there is for these other major diseases," Leigh said. He also called for making significant policy changes in order to highlight early intervention to reduce the disorder's symptoms, along with employment and other programs to help independent living for autistic adults.

"This approach would ultimately save money that otherwise would be spent on expensive custodial care," Leigh said.

According to the latest figures by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 68 children have been identified with autism. The disorder is more common among boys than girls. Moreover, parents with first autistic child have 2 percent to 18 percent chance of having a second child with the condition.

STATE HONORS UNITED SERVICES FOR POSITIVE BEHAVIOR PROGRAM

State education officials awarded a certificate of excellence to United Services for Children, honoring the agency for its efforts to encourage positive student behavior.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education presented the award June 10 during a ceremony at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. The department recognized 280 Missouri organizations for successfully implementing the Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (SW-PBS) program, a comprehensive approach for improving student behavior and academic performance.

Among the 280 honorees, United Services for Children was among the few that were not public schools. The nonprofit agency operates a pediatric therapy and developmental learning center for preschool-age children. Located in St. Peters, it provides services for approximately 1,000 children annually.

The agency is also one of the few early childhood programs to use Positive Behavior Support, or PBS, a program typically implemented at the elementary school level, said Mandy Settle, behavior specialist and chairwoman of the PBS program for United Services for Children.

The state recognized schools at three levels—gold, silver and bronze. United Services for Children received a bronze award. The levels correspond to the PBS program’s three tiers. The first establishes a proactive foundation of consistent expectations for all students. The second provides more intense intervention for at-risk students. The third addresses individual students with severe needs.

PBS started in the late 1980s as a federally funded project at the University of Oregon. Today, more than 70,000 schools across the United States use PBS. Approximately 700 Missouri schools participate in the state-funded SW-PBS program.

Tom Schutzenhofer, team supervisor for United Services for Children, introduced PBS to the agency in 2008. Schutzenhofer said he wanted to establish consistent expectations for student behavior throughout all departments and classrooms.

To better present PBS to children, the agency uses a tiger mascot named Paws. Children learn to observe Paws’ Laws—“be safe, be kind, be responsible.” Monica Wilmsen, early childhood special education teacher, uses a Paws hand puppet to instruct children on safety. For instance, the puppet might tell them to walk instead of run. The children do not want to disappoint Paws, she said.
