活動推介 : 真．我．影像：有關於自閉症人士的攝影展

從欣賞影像到發現真我，再從欣賞真我到發展自我影像。

來自美國的職業治療師Shay McAtee，將於今年九月中旬至十月中旬，在香港多處不同地方舉辦她首次在香港個人巡迴攝影展。

她是感覺統合的始創人艾爾斯博士的門生，多年來，她的工作常常會接觸到患有自閉症譜系的幼童和青少年。

由於她亦是一位專業的攝影師，遂拿起相機，逐一拍出他們的不同面貌丶神態，以及展現真我的相片集。

關於這輯相片的源起，原來是由於她多年來跟這群患有自閉症幼童的家長面談時得出的一種經驗。她發現，父母及這些孩子的家人都希望更多人懂得欣賞這些孩子在障礙困難以外的另一面。

其實他們跟其他小朋友沒有分別，都擁有童真丶快樂的一面，甚至有比起一般小朋友更來得純真丶美麗丶愉快丶滿足丶快樂!!!

她為了改變一般人只急於集中如何治療丶改善幼童本身存在的問題，很少會帶著欣賞的目光來看這群孩子，所以她特別想透過自己鏡頭底下，紀錄出來的畫面來提醒公眾及幼童的家人，多一點關注幼童本身的長處及獨特個性，必有可愛的一面。

他們的世界，不是只有難處，也有天真快樂的一面，分別就是我們大家的眼光如何看待孩子的哪一個著眼點。

Workshop: Progressive ABA – 4 Children’s Journey
This 1 day workshop is aimed to provide an in-depth observation at four children's journeys over time in an AutismPartnership program. During the workshop, participant will see how the children were before treatment and observe closely their own individual paths of treatment over a period of years.

Dr Leaf will explore the many different aspects of programming including dealing with behaviour problems, learning how to learn skills, social development, learning in groups and language acquisition.

A video journey will be complemented with Dr. Leafs careful analysis of why specific programs were done at specific times and how the curriculum and approach was flexibly used to help each student develop their skills.

This is a fascinating insight into AP's unique approach and the journey and development of four very different children in a progressive ABA program.

內容： 

近數年來，創作室致力於使用戲劇作為自閉症兒童介入的手段，舉辦了多個 針對不同年齡、不同功能的自閉症兒童戲劇班。創作室創立了一個「關係為 本的五階段模式」，所謂關係為本，即使用戲劇活動協助兒童發展人際關係 技巧，而五個階段包括： 

1. 以遊戲作為切入點 
2. 以情境作為切入點 
3. 以角色作為切入點 
4. 以第一身作為切入點 
5. 以戲劇排練和演出作為切入點 

使用戲劇活動協助兒童發展人際關係技巧，及增強他們與人溝通及交往的自 信心，會令他們因社交能力和自信心的提升而在其他方面的能力間接得益

傳媒報導 : 10年後美國花費在自閉症上的社會成本可能達到每年4仟6佰多億美元

The cost of caring for autism in the United States could hit the $1 trillion mark in another 10 years, if the disorder continued to prevail at the current rate, the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), researchers said. 

The researchers arrived at the conclusion by examining national data on medical services, residential care, special education, in-home care, transportation, employment support and lost productivity. For the current year, the team estimated that autism cost could range between $162 billion and $367 billion.

The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

"The current costs of [autism] are more than double the combined costs of stroke and hypertension, and on a par with the costs of diabetes,” Paul Leigh, lead author and researcher at UC Davis, said in a statement released Tuesday. The research team projected that autism cost by 2025 could be between $276 billion and $1 trillion, with $461 being the best estimate.

The cost predictions were based on the hypothesis that effective interventions and treatments for the disorder will not be identified or widely available by 2025.

"There should be at least as much public research and government attention [paid] to finding the causes and best treatments for [autism] as there is for these other major diseases," Leigh said. He also called for making significant policy changes in order to highlight early intervention to reduce the disorder's symptoms, along with employment and other programs to help independent living for autistic adults.

"This approach would ultimately save money that otherwise would be spent on expensive custodial care," Leigh said.

According to the latest figures by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 68 children have been identified with autism. The disorder is more common among boys than girls. Moreover, parents with first autistic child have 2 percent to 18 percent chance of having a second child with the condition.

The speaker Professor Rajiv Khosla is the Director of Research Centre for Computers, Communication and Social Innovation(RECCSI) in Melbourne, Australia. Rajiv Khosla has a multi-disciplinary background in management, engineering and computer science.

In collaboration with national and international collaborators, stakeholders and end users, he and his multi-disciplinary teamhave conducted more than 30 field trials of socially assistive robots in residential care, home-based care and community centre settings to support people with autism and dementia as well as their carers in Australia.

「香港自閉症聯盟」: 港自閉兒家庭缺支援

「香港自閉症聯盟」就香港近年接連發生自閉兒家庭倫常慘案，包括殺死患自閉症的親子，及遺棄自閉兒於外地等事件，有下列評論和建議：

(1) 這些倫常慘案反映香港社會對自閉兒家庭欠缺支援，特別是一些弱勢和離散的家庭，例如：單親和低下層收入的家庭，家長往往要獨自一人承擔照顧自閉兒沈重和終其一生的重擔，在長期精神壓力下，求助無門，走投無路，出此下策。

(2) 由於近年全球自閉兒人數急升，美國在1970年估計每10,000名兒童有1名是自閉兒，但根據美國政府疾病防控中心(CDC) 2013年統計數字，美國每68名8歲兒童有1名是自閉兒；而據本港教育、醫療、康復及社會福利服務的前線人員日常接觸個案，也反映香港的自閉兒人數逐年上升；再加上香港弱勢、離散和的低下層家庭同時增多，聯盟估計上述自閉兒家庭倫常慘案，只是冰山的一角。(CDC = Centers for Disease Control and Prevention www.cdc.gov) 。

(3) 「香港自閉症聯盟」有下列建議：

- 政府應加強社會大眾和各專業人士對自閉症的認識、關愛和支持的宣傳和教育工作，讓自閉兒家庭在困倦起來苦的生活中，得到及時的關顧和援助，不致於陷入絕境，出此下策，了結殘生。

- 政府應增加撥款在全港18個殘疾人士地區支援中心，設立自閉症社區支援專隊(類似社會福利署目前的防上虐待兒童科架構)，儘早識別高危的自閉兒家庭，和及早給予援手，避免自閉兒家庭倫常慘案。

- 聯盟亦呼籲自閉兒家庭、其鄰舍、親友、老師或相熟者，在自閉兒家庭遇到困境時，儘早向相關政府部門及或社會福利機構求助，不要讓同類家庭倫常慘案重演。

- 聯盟並開放於2015年5月設立的【香港自閉症人士法律支援熱線 554-224-54】，供有需要的自閉兒家庭、其鄰舍、親友、老師或相熟者，查詢求助途徑。

Understanding and managing challenging behaviour conference, 10 November, Exeter

傳媒報導 : China struggles to understand autism

Mainland China – China is uncertain exactly how many of its population is on the autism spectrum, something that may be hindering how the country handles the learning difference. The largest aspect being hurt by this misunderstanding of autism is ABA.

ABA stands for applied behavior analysis, a program that can increase a child with autism’s learning ability by leaps and bounds. It works by reinforcing desired responses to learning and social situations while ignoring undesired responses. The Wall-Street Journal reported information from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board which stated that Rhode Island there are more then 101 ABA centers. California has over 3,100. In all of Mainland China, there are only 4.

Karnina Cheung, one of the four certified behavior analysts in china, told the WSJ that anyone wishing to learn ABA properly, even in one of the four certified clinics, they have to learn from a book.

To combat this figure and to better employ ABA the Stars and Rain clinic teaches ABA to parents so they can use it at home for better results. And China is taking notice of the struggle.

Not only has the government finally recognized autism as a learning differences needing treatment, they have also financially helped affected families, and is in the process of carrying out two large scale studies.

The first study is spans eight cities with about 120,000 children on the spectrum in study. Yi Wang, director of the department of neurology at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and one of the study runners, says it should be completed this year.

The second study spans eleven cities with about 200,000 children on the spectrum in study. Expert autism researcher involved in the study Liping Wei says they partnered with Cambridge University, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, Peking University and the National Institute of Biological Sciences.

Dr. Wei and her team also created one of the first Chinese-language apps to help nearly nonverbal children on the spectrum communicate.
