Lunch Seminar

Dr. Sam Winter, Associate Professor, University of Hong Kong

Seminar Topic:
Can wearing a dress mean that you are mad? Children, gender difference and mental disorder

Date : 26th May 2011 (Thursday)
Time: 12:45 -- 14:00
Venue: Run Run Shaw 207

Introduction
Some children are gender variant: they display markedly cross gendered characteristics; interests and patterns of behaviour markedly unusual for their own gender and/or commonly associated with members of the other gender. Gender identity variant children go even further, identifying as members of the other gender, and wanting to be treated accordingly. Modern mainstream psychiatry designates such children as mentally disordered; as suffering from a disorder currently termed ‘gender identity disorder of childhood’. In this seminar I will ask what basis there is for viewing gender identify variant children in this way, and questioning the ethics of common mental health approaches with these children.
